Abandon the Idea

Some people never finish because they never start. Others are great at starting, but rarely finish.

Regardless of which camp you're in, if you want to finish more... you have to stop focusing on finishing.

John Steinbeck had a simple idea about this. He wrote:
“Abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish. Lose track of the 400 pages and write just one page for each day. It helps. Then when it gets finished, you are always surprised.”

He’s right. The best way to finish anything is to stay consistent with your actions today.

I know this firsthand. I started a book 16 months ago... and it’s still not done.
Yes, it’s a hard way to write. No, I don’t have a publisher breathing down my neck. But let’s be honest, if I had simply written one page a day, I’d be holding a finished manuscript right now.

That’s why I’ve adopting a new mantra:

Big accomplishments require small, consistent actions.

Today is my reset. And maybe it’s yours, too. It’s time to abandon the idea that you are ever going to finish.

Stop focusing on the finish line. Start falling in love with the process.

The best way to finish anything in the future is to be consistent in your actions today.
