Are You Energy Rich?
You are either energy-rich or energy-poor. So is everyone around you.
Last week, during a couple of days spent with a highly effective leader and businessman, I realized the stark difference between people who are energy-rich and those who are energy-poor. Everything this leader did was life-giving. He gave everything he had to whatever he was doing that particular day.
When I left, it was apparent that I wanted to be around him more not because of his wealth but because of his energy.
In Building the Best, I wrote about something called the heliotropic effect. It’s the phenomenon where plants naturally grow toward the light. They lean toward energy sources. They wither and die in the absence of it.
The same is true for people. You are biologically wired to move toward energy, toward life, toward light.
But here is the question you must ask yourself: Are you energy-rich or energy poor?
Your energy isn’t just about how much sleep you got last night or how many steps you walked today. It’s emotional, it’s relational, it’s spiritual.
You get energy from meaningful connection, hopeful vision, purposeful action, and honest rest. You lose energy from complaining, drama, drift, cynicism, and being around negative people.
While you should be striving to be around people who are energy-rich, the real power comes from being an energy-rich person.
Because a candle doesn’t lose anything by lighting another candle.
In a world of distraction and burnout, the leader with energy becomes the beacon others follow. So choose to be energy-rich.
A candle doesn’t lose anything by lighting another candle.
