As Good Or As Bad
It’s easy to think you will never lose again when you're winning. Similarly, it's tough to see yourself ever winning again when you have lost a lot.
This week, I was coaching a sales rep who has been on a bit of a losing streak. She had worked a lot of hours and had nothing on the scoreboard to show for it in almost four months. She was frustrated to the point where doubt and negative thinking about “I am not good enough” were prevalent in her language.
However, instead of thinking she wasn’t good enough to be a salesperson, I reminded her of the Patrick Bet-David quote: “When you are winning, you aren’t as good as you think you are. When you are losing, you aren’t as bad as you think you are.”
Part of your mental job when you are losing is not falling into the trap of believing you are a loser. You are a winner who is currently not getting the results you want.
Conversely, when the outcomes change and you win, you must remember to keep working because winning doesn’t last forever either.
The better you get at detaching yourself from the outcome, the better off you will be. But just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s easy.
When you are winning, you aren’t as good as you think you are. When you are losing, you aren’t as bad as you think you are.
