Most quarterbacks wear a number you expect. 16. 14. 9. 3. 7. It happens so often you stop noticing.

Then comes Bear Bachmeier, the quarterback at BYU, who wears #47.

It makes you do a double-take when you watch him on TV. He kept the number from his days as a running back and middle linebacker, and he never gave it up when he moved to quarterback. It’s different, and it stands out.

Here is what I want you to take from it: have the courage to be different.

Too often you play it safe. You do what everyone else does, the way everyone else does it. The safe choice feels comfortable, and it blends in. So be a Bear Bachmeier. Pick the odd number. Take the road no one else is taking.

One caveat. Different alone won’t carry you to your dreams. Different gets the first look. Great work earns the spotlight. What’s behind the different has to be great. Then make yourself stand out.

What’s your #47?
