Your dreams include the idea of you being important. That people will admire your work, accomplishments, or your title. While being important isn’t a negative, it’s not what matters most.
A few years ago, I delivered a workshop at a large company headquarters.
When I arrived early that morning, the CEO was already in the lobby holding the door for employees as they walked in.
No cameras. No entourage. Just a leader being intentional about positive energy.
Later that day, I asked one of the employees what made him such a respected leader.
She said, “He treats the janitor and the board chair the exact same way. It doesn’t matter what the person in front of him can do for him, he shows up for people regardless.”
That’s when it hit me. It’s nice to be important, but it’s far more important to be nice.
Your dreams about being important aren’t bad or unhealthy. Just remember that’s it’s not ultimately about your status, it’s about your service. You’ll be remembered more for the way you made people feel than the results you help deliver.
So today, choose to be nice to everyone you come into contact with. The barista at Starbucks, the server at lunch, the colleague that drives you crazy, the spouse that having a hard day. Even if it isn’t easy, choose nice.
It’s nice to be important, but it’s far more important to be nice.
