Don’t Listen to Everyone

Only take advice from people who want you to win.

The more you have a bias for action and therefore grow, the more opinions you’ll attract.

Seemingly, everyone will have something to say about what you’re doing, how you’re doing it, and what you “should” be doing instead.

But here is the truth: Not every opinion deserves your attention. One of the biggest lessons I have learned is that you should never listen to someone who doesn’t care deeply about your success.

Here’s why. It’s easy for people to play Monday morning quarterback and critique you from the sidelines. But you must remember that they don’t carry your goals or the pressure of your calling. They don’t have your vision or the actions to make it a reality. They only see the parts they want to judge.

Critics often speak loudly, but the ones who care about you? They speak with care and impeccable timing. They coach you to build you, not break you.

The key is to learning to filter feedback by thinking about their experience and how deeply they care about your success. So before you take someone’s advice to heart, ask yourself:

“Do they genuinely want me to succeed?

If the answer is no, or if you even pause when considering their intentions, smile, thank them, and ignore them.

Because life is too short and too challenging to take advice from people who don’t genuinely want you to succeed.

P.S. I am in Detroit today delivering a keynote and two breakout workshops for Little Caesars Pizza. If you haven’t ever had it, or it’s been a while, give them a shot…Pizza…Pizza!

Don’t take advice from anyone who doesn’t want you to be successful.
