There is nothing dramatically different about today than yesterday. Except the calendar changed from December to January, and the year flipped from 2025 to 2026.

And yet, for some reason, today feels different.

It feels like a new beginning. A clean slate. A chance for a fresh start. And if you’re anything like me, you like the idea of a New Year’s resolution. You like the vision of goals achieved and dreams fulfilled.

Most people will tell you resolutions don’t matter. I’m here to tell you the opposite.

Your New Year’s resolutions matter more than you realize.

Having something you care about aiming for matters. Think about a simple game of darts. If you just throw the dart at the board without aiming, the chances of hitting the bullseye are low. But when you focus, aim, and throw with intention, you may not hit the bullseye, but you’ll get a lot closer to it than winging it.

That’s what a New Year’s resolution does. It gives you direction, an aim point.

So clearly, setting a resolution is powerful. And today is a good day to write this quote down somewhere you’ll see it often:

“A cat that dreams of becoming a lion must lose its appetite for rats.”

African Proverb

That dream you have requires something different from you. If you’re going to allow yourself the luxury of dreaming, you owe it to yourself to elevate your actions. Think about it this way:

  • You can’t keep eating what you’ve always eaten and expect different results.

  • You can’t keep doing what you’ve always done and expect better outcomes.

A new aim requires a new appetite, and you are just the person to adjust your appetite.

Happy New Year!

If you’re going to allow yourself the luxury of dreaming, you owe it to yourself to elevate your actions.
