The world does not reward talent. It rewards courage.
I watched my eleven-year-old daughter, Lucy, play a tennis match recently.
It was back and forth, but two completely different styles were on the court. One player was taking chances, playing offense, being strategic, and hitting shots to win. The other player was a backboard, running around, getting everything back, and hitting it back for safety.
The aggressive player won the first set. The defensive player won the second set due to the mistakes of the person playing offense. Then came the tiebreak. The offense won 10 to 4.
After the match, the coach pulled both kids aside. He looked at the player who had been playing defense and said something I haven't stopped thinking about.
"You are a very good young tennis player. But your next level requires you to play offense. It requires you to take chances. It requires you to set the tone of the match. You need to come to the net more. It requires you hitting it deeper into the court even though it could go out. Just rememer, life rewards those who play offense.”
Here's what made that moment even more interesting to me.
That day, Lucy was the one playing offense. But she wasn't always. For most of her young tennis career, she played defense. Just focused on getting it back and not making a mistake.
Then something shifted. Clinics two and three days a week. Working with a coach. Building skill through repetition. Building confidence through work. And one day, she had the capacity to play offense.
But here's the thing nobody tells you. Capacity is not the same as choice.
You can put in the work, build the skill, develop confidence, and be completely ready to play offense. And you can still choose not to and keep playing it safe. The work you do every day builds your ability. But the work means nothing if you never take the shot.
Life rewards those who play offense. Not the ones who are most prepared, not the ones who have the most skill, but the ones who are willing to step up, take the risk, and go for it.
So here's the question that matters today. You've put in the work. You've built the skill. You have the capacity. Are you actually going to play offense?
Life rewards those who play offense.
