Run Towards the Roar

Fear grows in retreat

On the African savanna, lions have mastered the hunt. But there's a strategy they use that’s more brilliant than brutal.

The older lions and often wiser ones, who’ve lost their speed, strength, or teeth, can no longer chase down prey. But they still have something powerful left: their roar.

So the younger and more able lions position themselves on one side of the tall grass. When antelopes or zebras approach, the old lions let out a terrifying, thunderous roar. Startled, the animals instinctively run in the opposite direction, straight into the trap. That’s where the younger, faster lions are waiting to strike.

But here’s the irony: If the prey had run toward the roar, they would’ve survived.

What you and I often fear is an illusion. The loudest threat isn’t always the biggest one. You must run towards the roar, not away from it. The “roar” might be

  • A difficult conversation

  • A bold career move

  • Speaking in front of a room

  • Starting a new business

  • Asking someone for help

Whatever your “roar” is, your natural instinct will be to run from it. But running away doesn’t lead to growth; it just delays it.

You are courageous. You are the kind of person who runs towards the roar, not away from it.

This week, identify one “roar” in your life. Something you have been avoiding, dreading, or delaying, run towards it.

Because every time you do, you train your brain to be bold and courageous. Which is essential because fear grows in retreat, but courage grows in pursuit.

Fear grows in retreat, but courage grows in pursuit.

P.S. This week, I'm delivering a streamlined, virtual workshop from that very program titled: How to Lead a Winning Team: Talent, Culture, and Strategy in 2 Hours.

If you're responsible for leading people, this workshop will be an immediate game-changer for you. In this application-focused session, I'll guide you step-by-step through:

Talent: How to identify and retain your best performers and develop or replace your low-performers.

Culture: How to intentionally create and sustain a high-performing culture that drives performance and engagement.

Strategy: How to set clear expectations and goals to maximize your team's success.

The pop-up workshop is on August 7th from 11 AM to 1 PM EST over Zoom.
