Show Your Coachable

Being coachable is a skill.

It shows the world you have a hunger to get better and are willing to put in the work.

However, most people haven’t developed this skill. Early in my career, one of my first managers used to tell me, “People who can’t communicate think everything is an argument. People who lack accountability think everything is an attack.”

The spirit of his message is that it wasn’t his responsibility to tiptoe around me; it was my responsibility to be coachable. Your job is to eliminate the following words from your vocabulary:

  • “I already know that.”

  • “Yeah, but it’s their fault.”

  • “That’s not how to do it.”

  • “I can’t help it, that’s just how I am.”

  • “That’s not fair.”

To show you are coachable, replace defensiveness with curiosity, judgment with reflection, and excuses with ownership.

Being coachable is how you show thr world that you have a hunger to get better and are willing to put in the work.
