Researchers tracked 26,811 students for two and a half years as AI use went from zero to 80%. Here's where it got interesting.

The results shouldn't surprise anyone, but they're a stark reminder. If you want to truly know something, or do something at an elite level, the work can't be the shortcut. Strong obedience to action in the same direction compounds. So does weak obedience. That's the part people skip.

That doesn't mean you can't use tools like AI to help you. It just means if you're using tools to avoid the work, you should forget mastery. Because a shortcut around the work is a shortcut around mastery.

The scores on the homework looked great. That's the trap. It felt like progress. But progress you didn't earn shows up as a gap later, on the test that actually counts.

You've probably done a version of this outside of school too. Outsourced the rep. Skipped the struggle. Let something else carry the load you were supposed to carry. It feels efficient right up until the moment you need the skill, and it isn't there.

The work is the point. Not the output around the work.
