The Greatest Skill You Can Develop
It’s easy to have a good attitude when everything is going your way.
You make a birdie, you smile.
You close the deal, high-five.
You get the kiss, you’re on top of the world.
But what about when things aren’t going your way? Author and entrepreneur Alex Hormozi once said:
“The single greatest skill you can develop is the ability to stay in a good mood in the absence of things to be in a good mood about.”
That line stopped me in my tracks.
Can you have a good day during a bad season? Can you have a good moment on a bad day?
If the answer is yes, then you’ve developed something rare and powerful.
This isn’t something you master overnight. Staying in a good mood despite setbacks is a skill, and like all skills, it requires practice.
Last week, I played in the NC Amateur golf tournament. On my 6th hole, I hooked a 6-iron out of bounds and carded a snowman, an 8, on a par 5. If you aren’t a golfer, that’s bad, and I won’t lie, I was frustrated. My first thought was, “Why am I even doing this? I could be working instead of getting beat by college kids.”
Then I remembered that quote from Hormozi. I chose to reset my mindset.
On the very next hole, birdie. Eventually, I made the cut and finished 12th at the end of the four-day tournament, after a rough start.
It doesn’t always turn around that quickly. But the skill to stay positive when things aren’t going well? That’s something worth working on.
The single greatest skill you can develop is the ability to stay in a good mood in the absence of things to be in a good mood about.
