One night, our family was watching a show on Netflix called Our Planet. They highlighted a bird called the Laysan Albatross.
When a chick is born, it doesn't move. It just sits there and waits for its mother to come back and feed it. If she doesn't return, the chick dies. Not because it couldn't eventually learn to find food. But because it won't move until someone brings it.
At some point, that changes. The chick grows up, learns to fly, and becomes one of the most remarkable birds on the planet, soaring hundreds of miles over the Pacific with a wingspan of nearly seven feet.
But in the early days? It just sits and waits.
So whenever someone is acting lazy or waiting around for someone else to make something happen, we call it out. You're being a Laysan Albatross.
Here's the truth. You are not a baby Laysan Albatross. You have the brain, the skills, the discipline, and the ability to go make it happen. Getting help is fine. Things not working out despite your best effort can happen. But sitting and waiting for someone else to bring it to you? That's a choice.
Regardless of your age, it's your job to get up and go get your own. And if you've figured that out, now it's your job to help others think the same way. Have teenagers at home? No Laysan Albatross. Managing recent college grads? No Laysan Albatross.
Today is your day to go make it happen. No sitting, no waiting, no wishing. Just action.
No sitting, no waiting, no wishing. Just action.
