Everything of value has a price.
Sometimes it is money. Other times it is effort. Either way, it costs something.
Progress is no different, and the price of progress is discomfort.
During a recent Building a Dynamic Team session with an executive team, each member entered the boardroom with their own opinion about the team's health. Some thought things were fine. Others were quietly frustrated. But before they left, they saw something more clearly because of an uncomfortable exercise I asked them to do together. And at the end of the breakout. I shared a principle for them to carry forward:
A team can form in an instant. Dynamic teamwork is built by doing uncomfortable things together.
See, progress never comes from repeating what feels easy. It must come from discomfort.
A bodybuilder gets stronger by adding a little more weight or squeezing out one more rep than the day before. A marriage grows when two people choose to have the conversation they would rather avoid.
If you think you can stay the same, that is not how it works. You are either growing or you are slowly declining. There is no neutral setting.
Progress moves you closer to your potential. Avoidance quietly moves you away from it. Now, I do not know what price you are willing to pay for progress. But I do know this, you cannot expect growth without making the deposits of discomfort.
So here is the question.
What is one uncomfortable thing you are willing to do today for the sake of progress?
The price of progress is discomfort.
