Who You Hang With Matters

You probably heard the saying, “You become the five people you spend the most time with.”

The reason you have heard it is because it’s true. It’s why high performers like to be around other high performers. Proximity elevates each person to higher levels of excellence.

A coach I worked with used to say, “Trees don’t hang around with the grass, even though they started in the same place.”

What he was impressing on me was that if I wanted to become something I wasn’t, I had to get around people who were. You have to put yourself in proximity to people who elevate you, not the other way around.

Easier said than done. What about the negative parent? What about the significant other who would prefer you to stay the same? What about the friend who brings you down?

You have to decide. Do you want to hang with the grass or rise into the sky?
