You Don’t Have to Like It To Do It
It’s fun when you like doing something. That’s why most people spend their time on the things they enjoy.
But here’s the problem: the things you like doing aren’t always the things you need to do.
You don’t like paying taxes, but you need to.
You don’t like mowing the lawn, but it needs to be cut.
You don’t like working out, but your body needs it.
You don’t like studying for that test, but your grade depends on it.
Enjoying something is great, but here’s the truth: You don’t have to like the things you need to do.
And this doesn’t just apply to life, it applies to leadership.
You may not like having a tough conversation, but your people need it.
You may not like setting high standards, but your team needs to perform.
You may not like making hard decisions, but it’s required in the job.
Average leaders wait until they feel like it. Great leaders act differently than they feel.
Occasionally, my kids will say, “I don’t feel like doing it.” And my response is always the same: “Act differently than you feel.”
That’s the same response life and leadership demand. Don’t wait until you feel like doing it. Just get in the habit of acting differently than you feel.
Because often, the things you don’t want to do are the very things that will move you forward.
You don’t have to like the things you need to do.
