You Look Like Your Habits and Decisions

Habits bleed.

When you are young, you inherit a lot. The color of your eyes, your height, your shoe size, even the way you laugh.

But as you age, something changes.

You stop looking like your parents and you start looking like your habits and decisions.

Which is why I want you to remember, “When you are a kid, you look like your parents. When you are older, you look like your habits and decisions.

Sure, your genetics and DNA will always be a part of you. However, it’s your habits and decisions that end up shaping you. A habit is something you do so often that it becomes the very essence of your being. They are formed by the decisions you make daily until you end up doing them without thinking. Examples include:

  • What you eat

  • What you read

  • What you consume

  • When you sleep

  • Who you spend time with

  • How you treat others

  • Who you go into business with

  • What you do when no one is watching

Yesterday, on a coaching call, I reminded a leader: All those tiny seemingly forgettable decisions? They stack. They compound. They Bleed. Eventually, they become the most transparent image of who you’ve become.

You may have been born looking like your parents, but you’ll die looking like your decisions and habits.

But here is the good news:

You don’t need to change your life; you just need to adjust your habits. One moment and one decision at a time.

When you are a kid, you look like your parents. When you are older, you look like your habits and decisions.

P.S. This week, I'm delivering a streamlined, virtual workshop from that very program titled: How to Lead a Winning Team: Talent, Culture, and Strategy in 2 Hours.

If you're responsible for leading people, this workshop will be an immediate game-changer for you. In this application-focused session, I'll guide you step-by-step through:

Talent: How to identify and retain your best performers and develop or replace your low-performers.

Culture: How to intentionally create and sustain a high-performing culture that drives performance and engagement.

Strategy: How to set clear expectations and goals to maximize your team's success.

The pop-up workshop is on August 7th from 11 AM to 1 PM EST over Zoom.
