I have been dealing with low back pain for years.
Some days are better than others, but the discomfort is constant. I have tried everything short of surgery or a needle. Stretching, strengthening, foam rolling, physical therapy, and standing desks. You name it, I have probably tried it.
So when an Instagram ad from a local chiropractor showed up talking about the exact issue I was facing, I didn't scroll past it, I booked the appointment.
He showed me moving X-rays. Pointed out the problems. Walked me through a three-month program. The kind of confident presentation that makes you feel like you are finally in the right place. But right before he made his final pitch and told me the investment, he stopped and looked at me.
"Because nerves are involved in back pain, the brain is also involved. The more you believe this is going to work, the better the outcomes you will receive."
I haven't stopped thinking about that.
Here's what makes that so interesting. A chiropractor, someone whose entire business is physical adjustment, telling me that my brain was going to matter as much as his hands.
Turns out, the research backs him up.
Doctors testing headache medicine gave one group a branded version like Tylenol, and the other group the exact same medicine in generic packaging. The group that took the branded version reported significantly greater pain reduction.
Same exact formula for the medicine, but drastically different outcomes.
When people anticipate improvement, they get more of it. The medicine didn't change. Their minds did.
So what do you do with that?
You stop treating belief as a soft concept and start treating it as part of the prescription. If you go into something expecting neutral or even negative results, you are already working against yourself. Your brain is not a passive observer of your outcomes. It is an active participant in them.
The chiropractor was right. And honestly, so is every coach, trainer, or mentor who has ever told you that mindset matters. Your brain is the most powerful medicine you have. The question is whether you are taking it.
Your brain is not a passive observer of your outcomes. It is an active participant in them.
