Your Energy Matters

You can’t escape it. The energy of the people around you infects you.

Some people are life-giving. They lift you up and raise the energy in the room. Others are life-depleting. They knock you down and drain the energy from everyone around them.

And here’s the catch: if someone depends on you in any way, you are a leader. And leaders don’t just add or subtract energy, they multiply it. Two, three, even four times over.

People tend to be infected by energy in three ways:

• Tone – the sound and emotion in your voice

• Body language – the unspoken message in your posture and expressions

• Words – the choice of positive or negative language

When your tone is encouraging, your body language is inviting, and your words are hopeful, others feel it. But the opposite is also true: a sharp tone, a closed posture, or constant negativity can drain the room and infect others with fear and discouragement.

Energy is always contagious. It’s easy to have positive energy and lift a room when everything is going right. It’s much harder to do when things aren’t going your way.
