Welcome to the Saturday Reflection of the Optimistic Outlook, which just happens to be on the 4th of July. Two hundred and fifty years ago this week, a room full of ordinary men reminded the world what being optimistic actually means.

Signing the Declaration of Independence was a courageous decision that was fueled by optimism. A belief that the future was brighter, so much so that the men were willing to commit treason, which was punishable by death. Every man knew exactly what they were risking, and they chose to do it anyway.

Maybe that’s your reminder today that if they could be optimistic in the face of dire consequences, you can be optimistic in the face of much lower consequences.

Here are the two optimistic ideas that stayed with me this week.

Buried vs. Planted

Sometimes when you're in a dark place, you think you've been buried. But really, you've been planted.

Stop Trying to Go Back in Time

The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second-best time is right now.

Have a safe and happy 4th of July,

John Eades
